Lifting a standard load on a prepared job site follows a familiar process. Lifting an oversized load, whether irregular in shape, unusually heavy, or difficult to rig from a standard configuration, is a different kind of work. It requires planning that goes a bit deeper than the basics and operators who know what they are looking at when the load does not behave the way a textbook case would.

What Makes a Load “Oversized” in a Crane Context

In crane work, “oversized” does not just mean heavy. A load can be oversized because of:

  • Its dimensions, too long or wide to balance cleanly from a single center pick point
  • Its shape, with irregular geometry that shifts the actual center of gravity away from where it appears
  • Its placement, into a tight space, through a narrow opening, or onto a mounting position with limited clearance on multiple sides

Manufacturing equipment in the Akron industrial market is a frequent example: a large industrial press, a multi-zone heat exchanger, and a bulk processing vessel. None of these are designed with crane lift points as a primary consideration. The manufacturer might include a recommended rigging approach in the documentation, and that is a starting point. 

But translating that recommendation into a real-world lift configuration at a specific plant in Summit County, with the actual access constraints and floor conditions of that site, requires operators and riggers who have done this kind of work before. The rigging plan for a non-standard pick documents the specific attachment points, the sling angles, the hardware rated for the actual load weight and geometry, and the crane positioning that puts the hook directly over the true center of gravity.

Multi-point configurations are common in this kind of work. Two or three attachment points spread across the load provide more control than a single center pick on something with uneven weight distribution. The rigging plan specifies how those points are configured, what hardware is used at each, and how the load should behave during travel from the pick location to the set point.

Flatbed Hauling and Site Coordination for Oversized Equipment

Most oversized loads do not start at the installation point. They come in on a flatbed trailer, and the sequence from transport to crane to final installation has to work as a single operation, not three separate events that get figured out as each phase ends.

If the load has to be transported in a specific orientation and then repositioned before the pick, that gets resolved during the pre-job planning phase, not at the delivery site.
